On April 29 and 30, Canadian horror fans will get a chance to see THE SADNESS on the big screen. Hot on the heels of Shudder‘s acquisition of director Rob Jabbaz‘s acclaimed zombie thriller, distributor Raven Banner Releasing has announced that the festival hit will be released to select theaters across Canada ahead of its May 12 streaming and VOD premieres.

The film, which stars Regina Lei (76 Horror Bookstore) and Berant Zhu (We Are Champions) as a couple trying to reunite in a city ravaged by a plague that turns its victims into “deranged, bloodthirsty sadists,” swept the international festival circuit, taking awards for Best First Feature at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal and Best Horror and Best Direction at  Austin’s Fantastic Fest. Hailed as a return to 90s-style Hong Kong exploitation cinema, THE SADNESS has shocked audiences worldwide, prompting some programmers to issue trigger warnings because of the film’s extreme content.

“From the moment we first saw THE SADNESS  we knew this was something special,”  Raven Banner’s Managing Partner Michael Paszt says. “The film reaches heights rarely attained in the horror space.  Rob Jabbaz is definitely a talent to watch.”
