We all have bad days, days when we feel like a monster. Usually they begin with us waking up and realizing something’s different… and not in a good way. Oftimes we can instantly put our finger on it; other times we have to wait a little while… This gets me thinking of I WAS A SECOND GRADE WEREWOLF by Daniel Pinkwater, published by E. P. DUTTON.
In the book, a little boy wakes up and discovers that he’s changed. He’s hairy, he’s angry, he has sharp teeth… yes he’s become a werewolf. Throughout the day he growls at people and is generally rude. All day he expects people to notice his budding lycanthropy, but no one does. The next day is different; the little boy wakes up and is back to his old self. What’s more he’s in a great mood.
I was vaguely aware of this picture book before I bought it last week. Its simple depiction of a young boy having a bad day is as funny as it is effective. The illustrations match the simplicity of the writing, capturing the fun of the concept and the core of its message in just a few squiggly lines paired with some bold watercolors.
