PC gamers have been teaming up and hunting down specters within the world of PHASMOPHOBIA since late 2020, and soon, console gamers will be able to step into the shadows as well. Announced during the Xbox Games Extended Showcase at this year’s Summer Game Fest, indie studio Kinetic Games’ hugely successful ghost hunter will land on Xbox Series X/S consoles, as well as PS5 and PSVR2, in August.

PHASMOPHOBIA’s gameplay is custom-made for streamers, and the content creation community at large instantly began scaring the bejeezus out of unassuming players upon the game’s debut. Since then, the developer has steadily trickled in new content, including additional maps, real-world ghost tracking equipment, and two dozen styles of ghosts inspired by regional folklore.

The reveal trailer intersperses a handful of details among shots of in-game footage, affirming things such as cross-play compatibility, free content updates, and seasonal events. Also of note: While the game is heading to home consoles later this year, PHASMOPHOBIA is still in Early Access on Steam, meaning that the game is an ongoing work in progress. While specific details about what console players can expect are scarce at the moment, it’s likely that all content and patches delivered in the months leading up to August should be readily available on day one.

Ever since watching CREEPSHOW as a child, Kevin Hoover has spent a lifetime addicted to horror (and terrified of cockroaches). He wholeheartedly believes in the concept of reanimating the dead if only we’d give it the old college try, and thinks FRIDAY THE 13th PART V is the best in the franchise. Aside from writing “Cryptid Cinema Chronicles” for Rue Morgue, he’s been a working copywriter for over a decade and you’ve probably bought something with his words on it. He also believes even the worst movie can be improved with buckets of gore.
