Nathen Maxwell of the legendary Celtic-punk rock outfit Flogging Molly has joined forces with his singer-songwriter wife, Shelby Maxwell, to form a new band that’s miles away from hard-driving Irish hooliganism. Fronted by Shelby Maxwell, Volores is a dark Americana group that the couple describes as “mountain goth.” Formed during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Volores draws on such diverse influences as Leonard Cohen, Elliot Smith, The Cure and Interpol to craft an eclectic sound all their own.
Leaning into their sinister side and their love of classic horror for the video for their new single “CARRION CRY,” the Colorado-based duo pays tribute to the visuals of F.W. Murnau’s silent 1922 classic Nosferatu. In the clip, Nathen makes for a strikingly gruesome Count Orlok, while Shelby is a sublimely ethereal Ellen Hutter.
“It’s about not allowing yourself to be overtaken by the darkness that lives within all of us but rather finding new beginnings in the pieces of us that feel like they’re dying. A play on words,” says Shelby Maxwell, commenting on the song’s meaning. Naturally, Nosfertu‘s iconic imagery seemed an ideal complement to Maxwell’s somber lyrics.
“We knew right away we wanted to pay homage to the original Nosferatu when discussing music video options for ‘CARRION CRY.’ Carrion is the decaying flesh of a dead animal, but we sing it as a ‘carry on cry,’ to carry on and choose to fight to see another day while accepting the parts of yourself that you feel have died,” says Shelby Maxwell. “And to us, Count Orlok is a great physical representation of that internal darkness. That monster stalking every corner of your mind, driving you closer to madness and despair as you fight to survive.”
Ages, the debut album from Volores, arrives on February 24 from Broken Stag Records.
