First up, it has been announced that Gunpowder & Sky will give the current festival fave SUMMER OF 84 theatrical release August 3. Directed by the TURBO KID trio of RKSS (François Simard, Anouk Whissell and Yoann-Karl Whissell), from a screenplay by Matt Leslie and Stephen J. Smith, it stars Graham Verchere, THE BABYSITTER’s Judah Lewis, Caleb Emery, Cory Gruter-Andrew, Tiera Skovbye and Rich Sommer. The synopsis: “Summer, 1984: The perfect time to be 15 years old and carefree. But when neighborhood conspiracy theorist Davey Armstrong [Verchere] begins to suspect his police-officer neighbor [Sommer] might be the serial killer all over the local news, he and his three best friends begin an investigation that soon turns dangerous.”
Later in the month, on August 31 to be exact, Momentum Pictures sends BOARDING SCHOOL to select theaters, VOD and digital HD. Written and directed by Boaz Yakin (SAFE, NOW YOU SEE ME), its cast is headed by Will Patton, Samantha Mathis, Luke Prael, Sterling Jerins, Nadia Alexander, Tammy Blanchard and Lucy Walters. The synopsis: “When troubled 12-year-old Jacob Felsen [Prael] is sent away to boarding school, he enters every kid’s worst nightmare: A creepy old mansion, deserted except for six other teenage misfits and two menacing and mysterious teachers [Patton and Mathis]. As events become increasingly horrific, Jacob must conquer his fears to find the strength to survive.”
