The saga of infamous ax murderous Lizzie Borden is told in a new film starring Chloë Sevigny and Kristen Stewart, which just premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and has now been acquired for North American release.
Variety reports that Saban Films picked up the rights to LIZZIE, and will open it this summer in partnership with Roadside Attractions. Directed by Craig William Macneill (CHANNEL ZERO, the indie chiller THE BOY) from a screenplay by Bryce Kass, the movie also stars Kim Dickens, Denis O’Hare, Jeff Perry, Fiona Shaw and Jamey Sheridan. The trade offered the following synopsis: “The film chronicles the murders of the Borden parents, and documents a social order that saw Lizzie [Sevigny], unmarried at 32, relegated to the pariah status and trapped under her father’s austere and domineering control. When Bridget Sullivan [Stewart], a young maid, comes to live with the family, Lizzie finds a kindred spirit. Their intimacy inspires a bloody path forward.”
“I couldn’t be happier than to partner with Saban Films and Roadside on LIZZIE, a film that has been a labor of love for me for over 10 years,” Sevigny, who produced the movie with Naomi Despres and Liz Destro, tells Variety. “I am thrilled for theatergoers to see this incredible tale.”
