“Thriller” is in many ways, a classier word for horror but does NOT mean the same thing. A “true” thriller is a piece of media that does not set out to necessarily frighten only “thrill” and commonly features some sort of brooding crime drama with an extra dose of violence, suspense and grit. Like a good horror film, a “true” thriller gets your blood pumping, and when it’s over you feel like you’ve just run a marathon through the darkest bowels of the human psyche and barely gotten out alive.That’s exactly how I felt after watching MONOCHROME. Even the ending, with its peck of sunshine, wasn’t enough to pick me up. I was physically and emotionally drained. But I was happy. Happy because I had just watched a “true” thriller.
MONOCHROME tells the tale of two young adults driven to survive in a world where they are outsiders. One is a psychopath, the other a sufferer of synesthesia. Because of their mental states, both characters operate unconventionally – In the case of the psychopath, he kills, whereas the synesthesia sufferer has to find the person behind the killinigs. Both are operating under a ticking clock and have everything to lose. They may have different mental states and moral codes but they are both the same; they are mirror images of one another pushing on each other’s reflection from their side of the glass. They both live in darkness. They both want out. They both want to be free of each other’s reflection and of societies. Or do they?
MONOCHROME tears in like a serrated blade. Highly recommended.
