In the time-honoured tradition of kaiju movies, an ape causes chaos across a large American coastal city, creating pandemonium in the densely populated metropolis that the film has chosen for our pleasure.
Despite sounding like other ape-related kaiju properties on paper, this is the basic conceit of the direct to DVD Kaiju movie MEGA APE. This film comes courtesy of WILD-EYE RELEASING, known for such pictures as JURASSIC SHARK and THE AMAZING BULK.
When an animal rights activist team unwisely releases a secluded simian from a secret research facility, things go awry when it turns out the ape has been genetically experimented on. However, instead of growing smarter like some other apes in movies, the creature grows rapidly in size. Now the titular primate needs to be stopped before causing further destruction to Los Angeles.
MEGA APE is directed by Dustin Ferguson and stars Jonathan Nation, Bai Ling, Mel Novak, and the late Tom Sizemore in one of his last roles before his death.
