The Academy hasn’t shown any resistance to genre fare this year.
The nominations for the 98th Academy Awards have just been announced, and scary movies scored big, with 28 nominations for five films. For the first time in Oscar history, two fear features are up for Best Picture. Ryan Coogler’s SINNERS has set an all-time Academy record with 16 nominations, beating ALL ABOUT EVE, TITANIC and LA LA LAND, which got 14 each. Guillermo del Toro’s FRANKENSTEIN got nine noms. In addition, Amy Madigan scored a richly deserved Best Supporting Actress nod for playing WEAPONS’ Aunt Gladys, THE UGLY STEPSISTER scored a nom for Best Makeup and Hairstyling (Thomas Foldberg and Anne Catherine Sauerberg), and JURASSIC WORLD REBIRTH is up for Best Visual Effects (David Vickery, Stephen Aplin, Charmaine Chan and Neil Corbould). Best of luck to all of them when the Oscars are handed out on Sunday, March 15.
