The genre auteur goes in-depth about his celebrated film and TV-ography, with a little help from a member of the RUE crew.

The Fantasia International Film Festival team has posted the complete video (see it below) of the Artist Talk with horror maestro Mike Flanagan that took place July 21, 2024 at Montreal’s Cinéma du Musée, followed by his receiving the fest’s Cheval Noir career award. The event was hosted by Fantasia Artistic Director Mitch Davis, and the talk was moderated by RUE MORGUE’s own Michael Gingold. According to the fest, the award was bestowed “for his imaginative and heartfelt horror visions, for his boundary-breaking achievements in making dark and soulful character-driven genre television commercially viable without compromises, for the extraordinary work he’s done in popularizing landmark authors to a new generation. A writer, director and editor who creates with uncommon emotional resonance, Flanagan has moved genre mountains since emerging on the scene with his ingenious 2011 feature debut ABSENTIA (a Canadian Premiere at Fantasia that year). From features like OCULUS (2013), HUSH (2016), BEFORE I WAKE (2016), OUIJA: ORIGIN OF EVIL (2016), GERALD’S GAME (2017), DOCTOR SLEEP (2019) and the forthcoming THE LIFE OF CHUCK (2024) to miraculously profound Netflix miniseries events THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE (2018), THE HAUNTING OF BLY MANOR (2020), MIDNIGHT MASS (2021), THE MIDNIGHT CLUB (2022) and THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER (2023), Flanagan has already amassed several lifetimes worth of wholly individualistic creation. And he’s not even 50.”
