“WORLD WAR Z 2” is dead—again

The sequel to the Brad Pitt-starring zombie epic has already had a couple of false starts, and now it appears to have been kiboshed for good.

According the The Playlist, sources close to the movie informed them that Paramount Pictures has halted work on the WORLD WAR Z sequel. David Fincher, tapped for the gig by returning star and frequent collaborator Brad Pitt, was to have directed the film from a script by Dennis Kelly (who rewrote a previous draft by Steven Knight), though Paramount never officially put this incarnation on its schedule. Back when WORLD WAR Z 2 was supposed to be directed by A MONSTER CALLS’ J.A. Bayona (who ultimately helmed JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM instead), it was dated for June 9, 2017, and now it looks like the project’s future is in grave doubt. The first WORLD WAR Z was also plagued with production problems, such as a budget that ballooned past $250 million and a major reshoot of the ending, but it emerged to become a box-office hit. Though budget hasn’t been cited as a reason for the sequel’s shutdown, it’s evident Paramount ultimately decided not to roll the dice twice.
