One of the most influential and celebrated PC titles to come out of the late 90s has received a release date for its long-awaited second coming. SYSTEM SHOCK 2: 25TH ANNIVERSARY REMASTER, will land across PC, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One/Series X/S and Nintendo Switch on June 26th, 2025.

From the press release:

“The original System Shock 2 revolutionized storytelling, atmosphere, and gameplay in the medium, inspiring a generation of titles to follow. It completely reshaped the way gaming audiences viewed the potential for storytelling in first-person games and went on to win over a dozen awards and “Game of The Year” recognitions.

Set 42 years after the events of the first System Shock, antagonist SHODAN and her army of merciless mutants infest the starship Von Braun. Players embody a soldier who awakes from cryo-sleep with cybernetic implants grafted to his flesh. As he sets out to unravel the horrifying mystery of the derelict starship, he’ll need to hone his upgradable skills and utilize powerful weapons and paranormal psionic abilities to survive the monstrous creations of SHODAN – and endure her narcissistic god complex.”

With masters of the horror game remaster Nightdive Studios under the hood, the to-be-expected features are all here: 4K visuals that encompass both gameplay and in-game cinematics running at up to 144 FPS on PC and up to 120 FPS on PlayStation and Xbox consoles, cross-play co-op multiplayer and the inclusion of 50 new Trophies/Achievements. But perhaps most exciting is full mod support for PC gamers with community-made missions available at launch.

Current plans call for a digital-only release for SYSTEM SHOCK 2: 25TH ANNIVERSARY REMASTER, although physical collectors would do well to remember that The Thing: Remastered – another Nightdive offering – is gearing up for a physical release later this summer, several months after its stealthy debut on digital storefronts. And while console pre-orders aren’t currently open, PC gamers can head to the storefront of their choice and score a 10% discount on the $29.99 price tag.

Ever since watching CREEPSHOW as a child, Kevin Hoover has spent a lifetime addicted to horror (and terrified of cockroaches). He wholeheartedly believes in the concept of reanimating the dead if only we’d give it the old college try, and thinks FRIDAY THE 13th PART V is the best in the franchise. Aside from writing “Cryptid Cinema Chronicles” for Rue Morgue, he’s been a working copywriter for over a decade and you’ve probably bought something with his words on it. He also believes even the worst movie can be improved with buckets of gore.
