She’s alive, and today, she’s on the shelves. Universal Monsters: Bride of Frankenstein Lives #1 goes on sale today from Image Comics and Skybound, kicking off a four issue miniseries that hands horror’s most iconic bride an entire story of her own.
Writer Kelly Thompson and artist Mattia De Iulis, reuniting after their work together on The Cull, open the story as the Bride wakes with no memory of who she is. Assembled from stolen flesh and jolted into consciousness, she has to work out her own origins while surviving in a world that clearly wasn’t built to welcome her back a second time.
The character traces back to James Whale’s 1935 Bride of Frankenstein, where Elsa Lanchester‘s towering fright wig and electric hiss made her immortal in roughly three minutes of screen time. The 32 page debut carries a $4.99 cover price and arrives thoroughly buried in variants, eleven covers in total, with art from De Iulis, Joshua Middleton, Artgerm, Luana Vecchio, Rosemary Valero O’Connell, Christian Ward, David Talaski and Ryan Sook, plus a blank sketch cover for anyone who’d rather draw their own monster. It’s the latest entry in the publishers’ growing Universal Monsters comic line, following their earlier Frankenstein series.
Issue #1 is available now through Image Comics and at comic shops everywhere, with the miniseries set to continue monthly through its four issue run.
