The Jordan Peele-produced “spiritual sequel” to CANDYMAN has found the actor who will step into Tony Todd’s shoes for the title role.

Variety reports that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is in talks to take up the hook for the new CANDYMAN, which is set to roll next spring for release by MGM June 12, 2020. Abdul-Mateen recently appeared as Black Manta in AQUAMAN (pictured), and has a role in Peele’s US, opening next month. Peele scripted CANDYMAN with Win Rosenfeld, and the two are producing; the story returns to the site of the phantom’s original Cabrini-Green tenement haunts, which have since been gentrified. Nia DaCosta, of the acclaimed indie drama LITTLE WOODS, is directing.
