Prime Video has put a date on the return of its Spanish zombie hit. Apocalypse Z: New World, the sequel to Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End, will stream exclusively on Prime Video on October 30, the day before Halloween, in more than 240 countries and territories. A teaser trailer is now online.
Before it reaches streaming, the film will make a stop on the festival circuit. It debuts at Spain’s Sitges Film Festival on October 10 as part of the festival’s 59th edition, then gets its US premiere at Screamfest Horror Festival in Los Angeles on October 13.
The stakes are high for the follow-up. The Beginning of the End became the most-watched international Original movie on Prime Video, surpassed only by Your Fault. Carles Torrens (Sky Rojo, Animal de compañía) returns to direct, and Prime Video bills the sequel as a more ambitious, ensemble-driven story that expands the universe inspired by the work of author Manel Loureiro.
This time the action moves to the Canary Islands, which have become Europe’s last refuge following the outbreak of the TSJ virus. When a special mission sets out for the mainland in search of vital supplies, Roberto joins the team with questionable intentions. The dangerous operation turns into a desperate race for survival, with Roberto and his companions caught between hordes of infected and divided loyalties, and facing a timeless question: save yourself, or risk everything to preserve what little humanity remains?
The film stars Carlos Alcaide (El Internado: Las Cumbres), Julia Martínez (La promesa), Mónica López (Rapa), Tamara Casellas (Ama) and Santiago Vaca Narvaja (La sociedad de la nieve). Familiar faces return as well, including Jose María Yazpik (Narcos) as Pritchenko, a key ally from the first film who is searching for a possible way out, and Berta Vázquez (Vis a vis) as Lucía, a nurse barricaded inside a hospital under the constant threat of the infected. Fans of the original will also be glad to see Pedrito back as Lúculo, the cat who captured hearts the first time around. New additions to the cast include Axel Medrano, Pedro Hernández, Javier Godino, Ujin Moreno and Mario Mayo.
