The 6th Annual Portland Horror Film festival is coming up on June 23-26th, and the festival is encouraging women to apply for a waiver so that they can submit their feature-length or short horror films for free.

“There have been great strides towards having more equal representation in the film industry,” explains PHFF co-director Gwen Callahan, “and we’ll continue to support women directors in the horror genre until some equity has been reached.” PHFF acknowledges that even with those strides, only about 25% of submissions came from women-helmed films.

The waiver application is open to any women directors who have a horror film they’d like to submit for consideration for the 2021 season of Portland Horror Film Festival. For more information and to apply, please visit

Filmmakers are invited to submit their independent short and feature-length horror films through FilmFreeway at Independent studios or horror-oriented businesses interested in partnering with PHFF should contact us via
