Twenty years on, Pan’s Labyrinth still plays like the moment Guillermo del Toro‘s two great obsessions — fascist Spain and fairy-tale cruelty — finally found each other under the same fig tree root. Insight Editions is marking the anniversary with a pair of companion hardcovers that between them cover the film from script page to soundstage.
Pan’s Labyrinth: The Complete Screenplay is exactly what it sounds like: the full shooting script, illustrated with concept art and storyboards, a new introduction from del Toro, and a foreword from Baz Luhrmann. The edition also folds in newly commissioned art from Tomás Hijo, the Spanish illustrator whose painterly del Toro posters have become close to house style for the director’s catalog. Insight lists it at $50 for a 304-page hardcover.
Riding alongside it is Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth: Inside the Creation of a Modern Fairy Tale — 20th Anniversary Edition, an expanded reissue of the original making-of book by Mark Cotta Vaz and Nick Nunziata, with del Toro credited as a contributor. This one carries a foreword from Steven Spielberg, plus new interviews with cast and crew and previously unpublished concept art and photography, according to Insight’s own copy. It’s priced at $60 standard, with a limited edition — 500 copies, portfolio inserts, more Hijo prints, facsimile pages pulled from the film’s prop Book of Crossroads — running $175 to $350 depending on tier.
Street dates are, annoyingly, a little contested across outlets: several sites have reported both books hitting shelves on September 8, while Insight Editions’ own site currently lists The Complete Screenplay as a pre-order with a November 17 ship date.
