The fright veteran returns to the genre with the movie that rolls this August in Athens, Greece.
Confirming what we previously reported here, Neon and Serendipity Point Films have announced that David Cronenberg is revisiting one of his earliest works with CRIMES OF THE FUTURE, which the former company will release Stateside. “I have unfinished business with the future,” Cronenberg says of the project, an update of his hour-long 1970 movie, which is Cronenberg’s first original since 1999’s eXistenZ. Viggo Mortensen, Léa Seydoux, Kristen Stewart, Scott Speedman (THE STRANGERS, UNDERWORLD), Welket Bungué, Don McKellar and Lihi Kornowski star; the synopsis: “The film takes a deep dive into the not-so-distant future where humankind is learning to adapt to its synthetic surroundings. This evolution moves humans beyond their natural state and into a metamorphosis, altering their biological makeup. While some embrace the limitless potential of transhumanism, others attempt to police it. Either way, in this perfectly crafted Cronenberg world, which marks the iconic filmmaker’s return to sci-fi, ‘Accelerated Evolution Syndrome,’ is spreading fast.
“Saul Tenser is a beloved performance artist who has embraced Accelerated Evolution Syndrome, sprouting new and unexpected organs in his body. Along with his partner Caprice, Tenser has turned the removal of these organs into a spectacle for his loyal followers to marvel at in real time theatre. But with both the government and a strange subculture taking note, Tenser is forced to consider what would be his most shocking performance of all.”
“To work with David Cronenberg is to embark on a journey exploring terrain where no one has gone before,” says producer Robert Lantos, making his fourth feature with the Canadian visionary. “Each of our collaborations has been an exhilarating adventure and David’s unwavering vision is what real cinema is all about.” Other past collaborators who are part of the CRIMES team are composer Howard Shore and production designer Carol Spier. Mile End is set to release CRIMES OF THE FUTURE in Canada, while Rocket Science is handling international sales.
