David Lynch, the visionary filmmaker known for his uniquely dark cinematic sensibilities and shock of unruly gray hair has died, according to a Facebook post from his family.

David Lynch, 1946 – 2025

“It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch.  We would appreciate some privacy at this time.  There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us.  But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.’ It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way,” the post reads.

Media outlets including Variety and The Hollywood Reporter have confirmed the Mulholland Drive director’s passing. No cause of death has been reported at this time. However, Lynch, a lifelong smoker, announced he was suffering from emphysema in a post on X (formerly Twitter) in August of 2024. Despite the diagnosis, Lynch stated, “I am filled with happiness, and I will never retire.”

Lynch was 78.
