Horror screenwriting competition Killer Shorts is celebrating up-and-coming Canadian horror scribes, and the future is terrifying – in the best possible way. In a recent feature posted to the Killer Shorts blog, Los Angeles-based writer-producer Anna Bohannan compiled a list Canuck contest competitors and alumni who are making waves in the genre. And the best news? These exports from the Great White North and their unique voices are 100% tariff-proof.
Among Bohannon’s writers to watch are Season 6 quarterfinalist and Vancouver native Toby Marks, who wowed judges with her scripts I Was Here and the period piece Quiet Minds; Ontario-born Dustin Moore, whose Still Echoes landed him in the Season 6 semifinals; and Kristen McNaule, an award-winning filmmaker from Ontario whose holiday-themed script Nosebleed garnered third-place in honors in Season 5.
One of the most encouraging aspects of Bohannon’s roster of heavy-hitting Canadian horror screenwriters is that 70% of the list is comprised of women – a true feat in an industry and genre long dominated by men. With many of these writers currently seeking representation, industry executives should take note. The future of horror is here.
