It’s the latest look at the dark side of science, “Blending tension, intrigue, and a dash of dark humor.”
SC Films International and Rabbits Black have announced that their movie BREEDER will begin production February 18 in Vancouver. Award-winning TV and short filmmaker Alex Goyette will direct from his own script, which took the Grand Prize at the 2023 Cinequest Screenwriting Competition. Daniel Doheny and Maddie Phillips (pictured), Tanaya Beatty and Dot-Marie Jones star; the synopsis: “The story follows Russell [Doheny], a dedicated researcher who has spent years developing a revolutionary gene-editing solution to save the endangered bee population. Struggling with limited funding, Russell’s prospects brighten when a dog breeder, Patti, offers to sponsor his work. Drawn into her isolated ranch, Russell soon realizes that Patti’s ambitions extend far beyond saving bees. Her unsettling agenda includes breeding not just dogs, but humans–with Russell as her unwitting subject. Faced with a harrowing choice, Russell must decide whether to remain for or risk everything to escape her grip.”
“Five years ago I had an insane personal experience, which sent me down a rabbit hole into the terrifying world of genetic engineering,” Goyette says. “Our society has become a bit too comfortable playing God, and I’m thrilled to invite audiences to be a part of that conversation with BREEDER.”
“Alex has crafted a bold and captivating script that’s impossible to put down,” says SC Films managing director Simon Crowe. “With such a talented cast and creative team, I am confident BREEDER will deliver a truly unforgettable cinematic experience. We can’t wait to share it with audiences worldwide in 2026.”
