By GLENN TOLLE

Hi FRIGHTS FOR TYKES readers!! Long time no read! You’ve probably been wondering where I went. Well…I found this ring and I kind of turned into something. But I’m fine now! I promise…

In the first 2020 installment of FRIGHTS FOR TYKES I will be recommending THE MONSTER’S RING written by the prolific Bruce Coville and illustrated by the talented Katherine Coville, published by POCKET BOOKS in 1987. THE MONSTER’S RING is the first book in Bruce Coville’s MAGIC SHOP series.

In THE MONSTER’S RING a kid named Russell buys a ring that has the ability to turn someone into a monster at just one twist and a chant. But when Russell twists the ring thrice during a full moon, well…he might not turn very soon.

THE MONSTER’S RING is great book little book that teaches its young readers about standing up for people (even people you don’t like), embracing what makes you weird (or monsterous) and reading the fine print on potentially dangerous products. THE MONSTER’S RING also introduces its readers to Mr. Elives, the owner of the Magic Shop that appears throughout the Magic Shop Series. Lastly, THE MONSTER’S RING is graced with Katherine Coville’s beautiful illustrations whose watercolor renderings still reproduce wonderfully despite the size and quality of the paper.

THE MONSTER’S RING is a hair raising (and fang barring) read set against the backdrop of Halloween. What more could anyone want? The edition of THE MONSTER’S RING that I’m recommending can be bought on AbeBooks for $4.19 + Free Shipping in the U.S.A..

Glenn Tolle
Glenn Tolle grew up with a healthy interest in the macabre. His dad worked, and still works, as a grave digger, and much of his childhood was spent running around cemeteries and reading creepy books. All this combined with early viewings of the classic Universal monster movies led him to writing about the genre. He writes not only for RUE MORGUE.com but also for morbidlybeautiful.com under the pen name Glenn Strange. When not writing about horror Glenn talks about and interviews people within the horror and film community for the YouTube channel Psychic Celluloid Signals and creates original horror stories for publication.
