“THE SUBSTANCE” and “NOSFERATU” score Oscar nominations

Horror managed to make an impression on the Academy this past year.

The nominees for the 97th annual Academy Awards were just announced, and a pair of celebrated 2024 genre features landed multiple nominations. Coralie Fargeat’s much-acclaimed body-horror epic THE SUBSTANCE became one of the handful of fright films in history to land a nom for Best Picture, with Fargeat in the running for both Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. Star Demi Moore’s comeback turn in the lead role earned her a Best Actress nom, and the movie is also up for Best Makeup and Hairstyling (Pierre-Oliver Persin, Stéphanie Guillon and Marilyne Scarselli). Robert Eggers’ hit reimagining of NOSFERATU also got a Best Makeup and Hairstyling nom for David White, Traci Loader and Suzanne Stokes-Munton, and is additionally in the running for Best Cinematography (Jarin Blaschke–his second nom for a Robert Eggers film after THE LIGHTHOUSE), Best Production Design (Craig Lathrop; Set Decoration: Beatrice Brentnerova) and Best Costume Design (Linda Muir). In addition, ALIEN: ROMULUS is up for Best Visual Effects (Eric Barba, Nelson Sepulveda-Fauser, Daniel Macarin and Shane Mahan). We’ll be rooting for all of ’em when the Oscars are handed out on Sunday, March 2!
