Another genre favorite has joined the indie horror project.
Filmmaker Daniel John Kearney got in touch with the news that an ’80s-classic reunion just happened before the camera on his new fright flick THE MALAKAI. Joining previously announced co-star Terry Kiser (FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VII) in the movie is Catherine Mary Stewart (NIGHT OF THE COMET), 37 years after they shared the screen in the comedy favorite WEEKEND AT BERNIE’S. Kearney shared the pics seen above and below from the set.
“It’s a surreal honor,” Kearney tells us. “Terry is a dear friend since our time together on [the upcoming horror film] THE EVENTS SURROUNDING A PEEPING TOM, and I received word from producer Kelly Marks that Catherine was interested in a role as well—and I jumped! I think it was emotional for both of them and a bit of a full-circle moment—really special!”
Also starring Lucas Dunaway, Kearney, Hannah Fierman, Lynn Lowry, Andrew Hubatsek, Chris Guttadaro and Jason Crowe, THE MALAKAI is written, produced and directed by Kearney. The synopsis: “A couple caught in the wreckage of a deeply fractured relationship, fueled by the fog of alcoholism, return to a rural Kentucky town to finalize the sale of their rental home. As the layers of the story are peeled back, they inadvertently awaken a horrific community legend that finally makes its presence known. In a place where time feels stagnant and the atmosphere is heavy with unspoken truths, the duo stumbles into a series of events that are as bizarre as they are spine-chilling.”
The movie is “all practical effects, no CGI,” Kearney says, “and the story is deeply rooted in subtext and has something for everyone. This cast and tireless crew has made my heart full, and I owe it all to them!”
