It’s as brutal and bloody as movies get, and the overall effect is exhilarating rather than bleak because of the compelling and relatable everyman hero at its center.
For those that appreciate the works of the ol’ illusionist, DIRECTOR’S CUT should be a no-brainer, for everyone else, just understand that the scares (or lack thereof) take the furthest backseat to the humour.
Seeing SHOCKING DARK in this spiffed-up widescreen edition has the effect of making it seem like a different movie—though not, alas, a better one.
It is, in short, the mashup of GREY’S ANATOMY, THE EVIL DEAD, 28 DAYS LATER and THE DESCENT you never knew you wanted.
