It’s a combination of folklore and the filmmaker’s own experience.
Neon, the company behind PARASITE, THE LODGE, POSSESSOR, IN THE EARTH, TITANE and the forthcoming next features by both David and Brandon Cronenberg, has just begun production in Vancouver on an untitled fright feature, in partnership with Brightlight Pictures and QC Entertainment, the latter of which also backed Jordan Peele’s GET OUT. Directed by feature first-timer Bishal Dutta, it stars FRESH OFF THE BOAT’s Megan Suri (pictured), Neeru Bajwa, Vik Sahay and Betty Gabriel from GET OUT and UPGRADE. A plot synopsis has not been revealed, though the PR notes, “The story is based partially on Indian legend, partially on a personal family story from Dutta’s grandfather, and partially on the filmmaker’s experience being born in India and then moving to and being raised in America.” Neon will handle U.S. distribution of the movie. Dutta previously made the highly regarded horror short INFERNO, which won him a gig helming an untitled horror feature for James Wan’s Atomic Monster company and New Line.
