I’ve been fascinated with pirates and pirate treasure since I was a kid. Before Captain Jack Sparrow made his big screen debut, I was reading books on pirates and their treasures; Treasure Island was a favourite and Captain Kidd my favourite (real) pirate.
In SECRET IN THE MOONLIGHT, the first book in THE WELCOME INN series by E. L. Flood, published in 1994 by Troll Associates Inc. under their RAINBOW BRIDGE imprint, Molly and her sister Gwen attempt to track down the treasure buried in Dead Man’s Cove. Said treasure once belonged to a pirate named One-Eyed Zeke who is said to have lost it at the hands of a monster bat conjured by a vengeful practitioner of the black arts, who lost a loved one in a ship that One-Eyed Zeke scuttled. Legend says that Zeke and his ghostly crew now haunt Dead Man’s Cove, but Molly and Gwen aren’t deterred by pirate ghosts and bat monsters and decide to find the treasure before someone else does.
SECRET IN THE MOONLIGHT is a breezy and breathless read that keeps readers anxious to turn the page. I read it in one sitting and couldn’t put it down. Horror fans will find just enough thrills and chills to satisfy their cravings; those who love a good mystery will also find plenty to dig in this sharp witted and shivery treasure tale.
I bought SECRET IN THE MOONLIGHT at a used book store for $1.50. Even though my copy isn’t in the greatest shape, it’s become a treasure in my collection.
