Universal Pictures has confirmed the official title of its next trip into the Exorcist mythology: The Exorcist: Martyrs. The studio unveiled the name this week alongside six first look images and a run of new plot details, with Mike Flanagan‘s film now locked for a March 12, 2027 theatrical release.
Scarlett Johansson stars as Detective Julie Miller, an NYPD homicide investigator and single mother to her twelve year old son, Max. Early in the story, Miller apprehends a serial killer known as Father Sunday, played by John Leguizamo, and later witnesses his execution, a sequence that sets the film’s supernatural plot in motion. Chiwetel Ejiofor and Laurence Fishburne play priests drawn into the case once the demonic elements take hold.
Flanagan has described the project as a story within the Exorcist universe that has not been told before, pulling more from the tone of Exorcist III than from William Friedkin‘s 1973 original, and has promised something very different than audiences might expect. The approach continues the eerie, character driven horror Flanagan brought to The Haunting of Hill House and his recent Carrie adaptation. Rounding out the cast are Diane Lane and Sasha Calle, along with Flanagan regulars Rahul Kohli and Hamish Linklater, whose roles have not yet been detailed.
The announcement arrives alongside a new teaser, with Universal set to release the full trailer this Friday, October 9.
