Cullen Bunn is building out a personal mythology one haunted building at a time, and his newest return reunites him with the team behind one of his most acclaimed recent horror comics. We Cannot Remain, a new series from Bunn and artist Marika Cresta, brings the pair back together with their Deluge collaborators for issue #1, due January 20, 2027.

In it, a group of unhoused people, already worn down by real world hardship, take shelter in the abandoned Exeter Building, only to discover it’s haunted floor by floor, with each spirit carrying its own grudge and its own method of making the living suffer.

“A story of human perseverance in the face of awfulness, before and after death.”

Cullen Bunn

Bunn called it “the most haunted of haunted house stories,” with a premise that is equal parts ghost story and survival narrative, with the Exeter Building’s tenants fighting for redemption before the house claims them. The writer has also hinted that We Cannot Remain folds into a larger mythology he’s been building across his recent work, suggesting this isn’t the last word on the Exeter Building.

One of the variant covers for We Cannot Remain #1, out January 20, 2027 from Ignition Press.

Issue #1 arrives with three covers: a main image from Cresta, a variant from Joëlle Jones, and a 1-in-10 retailer incentive cover from Andrew K. Currey.

Ignition Press, the creator owned imprint that’s spent the past two years building out a stable of horror and genre talent, hasn’t published pricing or an order code yet, but readers can track down its growing line through its comic shop locator ahead of the January release. For now, We Cannot Remain joins a slate of Bunn projects proving he has no plans to let a good haunted house go to waste.
