The Criterion Collection is filling its Halloween month with nightmares. The boutique label unveiled its October 2026 disc slate today, and the lineup includes an extended director’s cut of an Oscar winner, a 4K upgrade for one of the most celebrated thrillers ever made, and a career-spanning box set from a filmmaker who gave the genre one of its defining haunted hotels.
The biggest news for horror fans arrives last. On October 27, Guillermo del Toro‘s Frankenstein gets a 4K UHD release headlined by Frankenstein: The Reborn Cut, a new extended director’s cut. Starring Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi as his creation, del Toro’s Oscar-winning take on Mary Shelley’s novel recasts the story as a tale of fathers and sons trapped in cycles of trauma. The set also includes a new making-of documentary and Q&As moderated by Martin Scorsese and Patti Smith.
A week earlier, on October 20, Jonathan Demme‘s The Silence of the Lambs returns to the Collection on 4K UHD with a new 4K restoration. Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins star as Clarice Starling and Hannibal Lecter in the adaptation of Thomas Harris‘s bestseller. Extras include an audio commentary with Demme, Foster and Hopkins, and a new essay by critics Caden Mark Gardner and Willow Catelyn Maclay.
The same day brings The Complete Kubrick. For the first time, all of Stanley Kubrick‘s films as director are collected in one set: 13 features and three shorts, all restored in 4K, The Shining among them. Each film comes with its original soundtrack and a 5.1 surround mix. The set adds more than 25 hours of supplements and deluxe packaging with rare photographs, artwork and documents bearing Kubrick’s own annotations.
Also arriving October 20 is Uli Edel‘s Christiane F., a harrowing portrait of a 13-year-old drawn into heroin addiction in 1970s Berlin, set to a David Bowie soundtrack. The 4K UHD release features a new 4K restoration, an appreciation by Sean Baker and interviews with Edel and star Natja Brunckhorst.
Fans of more unsettling fare should look to October 13, when Jerzy Skolimowski‘s The Shout arrives in a new restoration. Alan Bates, Susannah York and John Hurt star in this hallucinatory story of psychic dread, in which a composer and his wife take in a mysterious stranger. Supplements include new interviews with Skolimowski and producer Jeremy Thomas, plus the vintage UK TV program On the Set of “The Shout.”
The month opens on October 6 with Ngozi Onwurah‘s Welcome II the Terrordome. Her furious Afrofuturist dystopia imagines Black citizens segregated into a slum that is ready to erupt after a young boy is murdered. The new restoration comes with a commentary by Onwurah, cinematographer Alwin H. Küchler and curatorial director Ashley Clark, along with three of Onwurah’s short films. Rounding out the slate on October 13 is Eclipse Series 5: The First Films of Samuel Fuller, collecting the maverick director’s first three independent features.
