Freaks for a Quarter
Have you ever noticed that the most mundane things from the past appear terrifying? Images of small children celebrating Halloween in homemade masks are nightmare fuel by today’s standards. Large, oddly shaped heads sit atop slim shoulders. Black, cavernous eyes stare blankly at the photographer. It’s downright freaky. Even gumball machines greeted children with any number of supernatural creatures and shockingly inappropriate yet kid-ified implements. On one end of the spectrum, you’d find finger traps, mini handcuffs, a veritable armory of mini diecast weapons, and laughably toy-etic torture devices. On the other end, we find a menagerie of finger monsters, disturbingly sticky creatures, body parts that crawl down walls, spikey aliens and what can only be described as upscaled germs. These days, both gumball machines and Halloween costume aisles are fairly sanitized, so naturally, those vintage freakish collectibles are highly sought after.
