Always a showcase for fine fear fare, it’s got a great lineup for its first physical festival since 2019.
The 22nd annual Boston Underground Film Festival takes place March 23-27 at the Brattle Theatre in Harvard Square, Cambridge, MA. Over those five days, the fest will host a genre feast that includes:
- New England premiere of Goran Stolevski’s witchcraft thriller YOU WON’T BE ALONE, starring Noomi Rapace
- New England premiere of Hanna Bergholm’s coming-of-age/body-horror opus HATCHING (pictured; see review here)
- New England premiere of Eskil Vogt’s THE INNOCENTS, about a group of children discovering their frightening powers
- England premieres of two from Gaspar Noé: VORTEX, a study of aging starring Dario Argento, and the occult tale LUX ÆTERNA
- Justin Kurzel’s Australian true-crime shocker NITRAM
- East Coast premiere of Addison Heiman’s HYPOCHONDRIAC, in which a man undergoes inexplicable physical afflictions
- Chloe Okuno’s WATCHER, with IT FOLLOWS’ Maika Monroe as an American woman in Bucharest dealing with a stalker
- Anita Rocha da Silveira’s MEDUSA, with Christian young women punishing sinners to the extreme
- Avalon Fast’s end-of-innocence psychodrama HONEYCOMB
- New England premiere of Saul Williams and Anisia Uzeyman’s Afrofuturist/cyberpunk/Afropunk sci-fi musical NEPTUNE FROST
- New England premiere of Philipp Virus’ documentary FREAKSCENE: THE STORY OF DINOSAUR, JR.
There will also be the East Coast premiere of a new restoration of THE NEST, the killer-cockroach flick from Roger Corman and director Terence H. Winkless, and a 40th-anniversary kids’ screening of Don Bluth’s THE SECRET OF NIMH, plus a large selection of short films.
