The legendary filmmaker is back with a new feature—which harks back to one of his very first movies.
IndieWire reports that David Cronenberg is set to shoot the science fiction film CRIMES OF THE FUTURE in Greece from August 2-September 10, largely in Athens. It’ll be his first film since 2014’s MAPS TO THE STARS. Though story details haven’t been revealed, it would seem this is an update of his hour-long 1970 CRIMES, which centers on the search for a mad dermatologist in the midst of a cosmetic plague that has killed the world’s sexually mature women. The new CRIMES would seem to be a secret project that actor Viggo Mortensen told GQ about earlier this year, that would reunite him with his EASTERN PROMISES director. “It’s something he wrote a long time ago, and he never got it made. Now he’s refined it, and he wants to shoot it. Hopefully, it’ll be this summer w’’ll be filming. I would say, without giving the story away, he’s going maybe a little bit back to his origins… It’s almost like a strange film noir story. It’s disturbing and it’s good, I think. But since his origins, he’s obviously developed in terms of technique and self-assurance as a director.”
CRIMES producer Robert Lantos told KFTV and World of Locations, sister publications to Screen Daily, “I am looking forward to returning to Greece to shoot another film with Argonauts [Productions, the local production company]. It has been 14 years since we shot FUGITIVE PIECES in Athens, Hydra and Mitilini, an experience of which I have fond and positive souvenirs. Athens is the perfect setting for CRIMES OF THE FUTURE as it is bespoke tailoring for David Cronenberg’s unique vision of a future which intermingles with the past.” We’ll bring you more about CRIMES as we find it out!
