Based out of Calgary, Alberta, Tony Clemence is a self-taught artist with has a knack for horror who loves to create epic pieces for his own enjoyment. A great example is his version of the beloved “Tarman” from RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD – Clemence became impatient waiting for a company to release a figure in the dimensions he wanted, so he made this 18″ version for himself. “When I make these figures, it’s definitely for personal collecting, but only because I can’t find a certain one, or a replica to my standards. I’m a detail artist so I’m picky with the accuracy. A lot of people collect the 12 1/6″ scale figures, but mine are usually 18 1/4″ scale. I find its easier to do detail and to look at.”
Tony also hand-paints and makes the wardrobes for his figures, including these ornate 34″ collectibles from KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE.
“When I started my Killer Klowns, I just sculpted a head with no intentions of a body. I made their bodies out of large wooden sticks just glued together. They were too fragile, but it gave me measurement perspective for when I sculpted the bodies. I hand-sewed the outfits (which took a lot of time because I’ve never sewn), plus sizing mistakes kept happening, too, so it really tested my patience. Plus keeping all details as screen-accurate as I could. The original spike Klown took roughly 50 hours to build completely with sculpting his head, hands and shoes, and I even made the puppet gun light up and spin with a mechanism I made into the clay which would be ran by small wires to a button on his leg. After creating the moulds and sewing patterns, I can now recreate one in 6-10 hours. The Klowns were my first and biggest projects so far. They are 34 inches tall.”
Tony doesn’t limit his artwork to figures; he has also been creating some very body art as a tattoo artist for over seven years.
