It’s a folk-horror feature from award-winning short filmmaker Minos Papas.
MOTHERWITCH, which has played numerous European festivals and showcases, has its North American premiere Thursday, July 30 at Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival. Directed by Papas from a script he wrote with Nikolas Kouroumtzis and Euripides Dikaios, it stars Margarita Zachariou, Miltos Yerolemou, Jason Hughes, Danai Katsameni, Athos Antoniou and Marina Makris. The synopsis: “Eleni, a scorned painter in Cyprus in 1882, attempts to resurrect her dead children, but instead awakens the Kalikantzari creatures of Cypriot folklore. Now she must find a way to overcome her grief and anger and dispel the curse that has befallen her village.MOTHERWITCH is very much a love letter to Cyprus—to its captivating beauty, its cloudswept mountains and blood-red earth, its lullabies, superstitions, and stories whispered from grandmother to child.”
