It’s a provocative study of the dark side of science.

Independent Film Company and Shudder have announced that they’ve picked up rights to BREEDER for the U.S., Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. Written and directed by feature first-timer Alex Goyette, it stars Daniel Doheny, Dot Marie Jones, Maddie Phillips and Tanaya Beatty. World-premiering this Saturday, June 6 at the Tribeca Festival, with follow-up screenings on June 7 and 13, the movie will receive theatrical release this fall. The synopsis: “College student Russell [Doheny] is focused on developing a new game-changing solution to save the endangered bee population from extinction. But there’s a problem: He can’t secure enough funding. That’s before a potential lifeline shows up in the form of a random but tempting financial offer from a poodle breeder named Patti [Jones], who lives off the grid on an isolated ranch. Russell visits Patti to see if her offer is legit or too good to be true. Unfortunately, after several awkward interactions and a growing sense of unease, he learns that it’s the latter.”

“Independent Film Company and Shudder have always been a dream home for us,” says Goyette. “We’re thrilled to partner with them to bring BREEDER to audiences following its world premiere at Tribeca. As conversations around eugenics continue to resurface, our film confronts those ideas through the eyes of a deranged poodle breeder.”

“BREEDER is the kind of movie that makes you lean forward and ask, ‘How did they get away with this?’” says IFC’s Mark Ward. “It’s provocative and constantly surprises you just when you think you’ve figured it out. We knew the moment we saw it that audiences will be talking about it long after they leave the theater, and we can’t wait to shock audiences on the big screen later this year.”
