“SINNERS” and “FRANKENSTEIN” score big in Critics Choice Awards nominations

WEAPONS’ Amy Madigan is in the running for another prize as well.

Various sources have reported on the nominees for the 31st Critics Choice Awards nominations, in which Ryan Coogler’s SINNERS and Guillermo del Toro’s FRANKENSTEIN had very strong showings. SINNERS topped all films with 16 nominations total, including:

  • Best Picture
  • Best Director (Coogler)
  • Best Actor (Michael B. Jordan)
  • Best Supporting Actress (Wunmi Mosaku)
  • Best Young Performer (Miles Caton)
  • Best Original Screenplay (Coogler)
  • Best Casting and Ensemble (Francine Maisler)
  • Best Cinematography (Autumn Durald Arkapaw)
  • Best Production Design (Hannah Beachler and Monique Champagne)
  • Best Costume Design (Ruth E. Carter)
  • Best Editing (Michael P. Shawver)
  • Best Score (Ludwig Göransson)
  • Best Song (“I Lied to You,” Raphael Saadiq and Ludwig Göransson)
  • Best Hair and Makeup (Siân Richards, Ken Diaz, Mike Fontaine and Shunika Terry)
  • Best Visual Effects (Michael Ralla, Espen Nordahl, Guido Wolter and Donnie Dean)
  • Best Sound (Chris Welcker, Benny Burtt, Brandon Proctor, Steve Boeddeker, Felipe Pacheco and David V. Butler)

FRANKENSTEIN was cited for:

  • Best Picture
  • Best Director (del Toro)
  • Best Supporting Actor (Jacob Elordi)
  • Best Adapted Screenplay (del Toro)
  • Best Cinematography (Dan Laustsen)
  • Best Production Design (Tamara Deverell and Shane Vieau)
  • Best Costume Design (Kate Hawley)
  • Best Score (Alexandre Desplat)
  • Best Hair and Makeup (Mike Hill, Jordan Samuel and Cliona Furey)
  • Best Visual Effects (Dennis Berardi, Ayo Burgess, Ivan Busquets and José Granell)
  • Best Sound (Nathan Robitaille, Nelson Ferreira, Christian Cooke, Brad Zoern and Greg Chapman)

In addition, Amy Madigan, who just won a New York Film Critics Circle Award for her turn as WEAPONS’ Aunt Gladys, got a Best Supporting Actress nod, and the film is also up for Best Original Screenplay (Zach Cregger), Best Young Performer (Cary Christopher) and Best Hair and Makeup (Leo Satkovich, Melizah Wheat and Jason Collins). And 28 YEARS LATER scored a nom for Best Hair and Makeup (Flora Moody and John Nolan). The awards will be aired live on E! on Sunday, January 4. Are we headed for a horror-happy Oscars? Stay tuned…
