The controversial fighting game franchise that launched a shitstorm of outrage from politicians and parent groups upon its release in the early ‘90s is getting toasty all over again, with the newly announced MORTAL KOMBAT: LEGACY KOLLECTION.

Revealed during Sony’s PlayStation State of Play event on June 4th, retro game remaster savants Digital Eclipse are dusting off the arcade cabinets and compiling several of the formative entries in the MK kanon into a killer kollection. While a complete list of features and potential quality-of-life improvements has yet to be released, online multiplayer has been confirmed, made possible through the use of rollback netcode. And while the entire list of included games has been promised to grow over the coming months, console and arcade counterparts will both be included. That means if you missed out on the “gray blood” and toned-down fatalities in the SNES port the first time around, you’ll now be able to see what Nintendo fanboys were saddled with when the game hit home consoles on Mortal Monday more than 30 years ago.

Titles confirmed so far include:

  • Mortal Kombat – 1992 (Arcade, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, Game Gear)
  • Mortal Kombat II – 1993 (Arcade, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, 32X)
  • Mortal Kombat 3 – 1995 (Arcade, SNES, Genesis)
  • Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 – 1995 (Arcade, SNES)
  • Mortal Kombat 4 – 1997 (Arcade)
  • Mortal Kombat Advance – 2001 (Game Boy Advance)
  • Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance – 2002 (Game Boy Advance)
  • Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition – 2003 (Game Boy Advance)

What’s more, the MORTAL KOMBAT: LEGACY KOLLECTION comes complete with an interactive documentary detailing the franchise’s history. Expect mounds of rare concept art, archival video footage and insight from the series’ creators Ed Boon, John Tobias and other visionaries who dared to digitize human characters into a video game and then rip their spines out.

MORTAL KOMBAT: LEGACY KOLLECTION is set to launch in 2025 on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One consoles, PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch.

Ever since watching CREEPSHOW as a child, Kevin Hoover has spent a lifetime addicted to horror (and terrified of cockroaches). He wholeheartedly believes in the concept of reanimating the dead if only we’d give it the old college try, and thinks FRIDAY THE 13th PART V is the best in the franchise. Aside from writing “Cryptid Cinema Chronicles” for Rue Morgue, he’s been a working copywriter for over a decade and you’ve probably bought something with his words on it. He also believes even the worst movie can be improved with buckets of gore.
