FRIGHTS FOR TYKES TOURS THE “WEIRD U.S.”

By GLENN TOLLE

Back when I was 16 and my uncle was driving my cousins and I to an ice cream parlor, I found a book in the back of the car that he had bought for the kids on long car rides. It was titled WEIRD NEW YORK: YOUR TRAVEL GUIDE TO NEW YORK’S LOCAL LEGENDS AND BEST KEPT SECRETS. I loved it from the moment I set eyes on it, and set out to read all the entries in the series. I’d contemplated recommending WEIRD NEW YORK for this column before, but felt the books didn’t quite fit, as they weren’t exactly for kids. Then, at a book sale last week, I discovered something…weird.

In this edition of FRIGHTS FOR TYKES I will be recommending WEIRD U.S.: A FREAKY FIELD TRIP THROUGH THE 50 STATES, written by Matt Lake and Randy Fairbanks, and published by STERLING CHILDREN’S BOOKS.

As the title suggests, this book takes young readers on the ultimate cross country tour of the United States. While not all of the stops are strictly scary, they’re certainly weird and the ones that are strictly scary are…well… very. Chapters that will be of most interest to young horror fans include: MYSTERIOUS MUSEUMS & CURIOUS COLLECTIONS; HAUNTED HOLIDAY;  A CREEPY CREATURE EXPEDITION; A GUIDED TOUR OF THE UNKNOWN: ROADS & BRIDGES BEST NOT TRAVELED; ANCIENT MYSTERIES; and finally TOMBSTONE TOURS. Other spooky and kooky things are sprinkled throughout other chapters, but I won’t go into those, you’ll have to pick up this travel guide and find out for yourself!

You can get your very own edition of WEIRD U.S.: A FREAKY FIELD TRIP THROUGH THE 50 STATES on AMAZON for $5.58, free shipping, used, in “Good” condition.

Road trips can be expensive, motels can be musty, this book will allow you and your child the ultimate road trip… for the price of two jumbo gas station coffees. Happy Travels!
