As the only person who dug the first (even though it's not a good movie by any means), I have higher hopes for this one with now actually havin' read some of the comics, and seein' what could've/should've been with Stallone's incarnation.
Here's hopin' that Judge Death (that's the characters name, right?) shows up in it.

...Judge Death would be excellent in the sequel, but given the total balls-up of the Stallone version, This one should be an equivalent to Batman Begins; a reintroduction of the character and Mega City One and the madness therein to the modern cinephile. That said...I'm just hoping the helmet stays on, and the story gets told correctly...beyond that, it'll give the original 2000 AD stories a chance for proper reprints in hardcover editions...

It's a big green reboot. I too would love to see Judge Death and the other Dark Judges for that matter but I can't see them being in the first film.

I've only read a few issues of Judge Dredd from the 80s (2000AD has never been properly sold in the US AFAIK). I think it's a pretty interesting comic and would definitely be game for a movie.
I haven't seen the original due to the bad reviews, but hopefully they learned their lesson.

It is pretty bad, but there are some really cool sequences in it. The stuff before Stallone takes off the helmet is pretty good (basically about 10 minutes or so in the beginnin'), the fight with the cannibals, and the ABC robot. Don't get me wrong, it's still terrible though (damn you filmmakers for addin' Rob Schneider's character). I'd love to see the director's cut of it, as it's supposed to be a lot different than what showed up on screen.
But I dunno, for some reason, I still dig it.

You are not alone.
Check out this Diane Lane Judge Hershey action figure.
