Rue Morgue #81 Issue Sneak Peek: Pumpkinhead

ON STANDS AUGUST 1st!
THE TORTURED SOUL OF ED HARLEY
The late great Stan Winston's monster-making career was in hyperdrive during the late 1980s, but he took time out from big money projects to make his directorial debut with a low-budget, old-school creature feature with a classic morality play at its core. Interviews with star Lance Henriksen and Oscar-winning creature creators Alec Gillis and (Pumpkinhead himself) Tom Woodruff Jr.
by John W. Bowen and Jovanka Vuckovic
THE CANNIBAL EXPRESS
The first of fifteen film adaptations of Clive Barker's Book of Blood begins with the ultra-gory Midnight Meat Train. Now, after a bumpy studio ride, Ryuhei Kitamura's Midnight Meat Train rolls into theatres. Plus: News on two more Films of Blood.

In the secret occult world of Katy Horan's folk art, the forest is a very dark place.

Sweet. Pumpkinhead has always been a favorite of mine.
Now if it would only get a decent R1 release.

Pumpkinhead is Stan Winston's singular genre feature film and there's a SE DVD coming out in Sept (Nallix, you got your wish), so it was a no-brainer which Winston monster was going on the cover (though he did NOT create this monster, his crew did, while he handled directing duties).

Sweet as. I almost had the chance to meet him last year. Still actually got to watch pumpkinhead though. Put it on late one night, but fell asleep about ten minutes in.

My wish includes an OAR anamorphic transfer. Sadly, all the info I've seen has it as the old open matte full frame bullshit.
Please tell me I'm wrong about this DVD so I can sleep at night.

As well as the timely tribute to the genius that was Stan Winston I'll be interested to read Gary's article about the comic adaptation of Robert E Howard's terrific tale of terror, I feel that Howard's most famous character often overshadows his other contributions to the genre.

I haven't bought in a few months for fiscal reasons but this coming month I say fuck 'fiscality'! In addition to the Stan Winston article (which should be worth the price of admission alone) I'm really looking forward to G-Ms take on Philosophy of a Knife and believe it not, more than anything, I'm most anticipating... Bowen's ode to one of the finest fucking films to fly under the Troma banner, Mother's Day!!

As much as I long for the more obscure coverage a) the cover IS great and b) no one can deny the importance of Stan Winston to the genre. Well done. Any chance of a serious WIP or R&R feature? Have to say Gary Pullin and his team are just fuckin' incredible!

....this is truth. I have, also, never danced the Time Warp, even in my bedroom at three in the morning. If the zombie dance is fun, fine...this still doesn't make Thriller a "classic cut".

Received my issue today. Looks great! As usual, the cover looks even better when it's in print right in front of me.
I've said this before, but upon getting each new issue of RM, I feel as excited about looking through it as I used to be in the 70s and 80s when the new issue of Cinefantastique would come out. Nothing does it for me anymore quite like RM does!

Never been a fan of MJ either, but I wouldn't dispute the Thriller video as a Classic Cut at all. Surely it's a succinct distillation of the '80's horror ethos and highly influential on youngsters of the era, so yeah, it deserves to be there.

You know it does.
That video as a kid used to scare the living shit outta me! I'm talking hide behind the sofa kind of scared. Its kind of ironic that now, nothing apart from ghost films get to me, but back then i was scared of everything and anything! Childs play, thriller, at one point as a kid i was scared of the ewoks?!
The behind the scenes footage is awesome.
