Ohio teacher burned cross on kids' arms
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - A public school teacher preached his Christian beliefs despite complaints by other teachers and administrators and used a device to burn the image of a cross on students' arms, according to a report by independent investigators.

Mount Vernon Middle School teacher John Freshwater also taught creationism in his science class and was insubordinate in failing to remove a Bible and other religious materials from his classroom, the report said.
School board members were scheduled to meet Friday afternoon to discuss the findings by consulting firm H.R. On Call Inc., hired by the district to investigate. The report was released Thursday.
School Superintendent Stephen Short wouldn't comment on the report before Friday's meeting, his office said. A message seeking comment was left for Freshwater's attorney, Roger Weaver.
The report comes one week after a family filed a federal lawsuit in Columbus against Freshwater and the school district, saying Freshwater burned a cross on their child's arm that remained for three or four weeks.
Freshwater's friend Dave Daubenmire defended him.
" With the exception of the cross-burning episode ... I believe John Freshwater is teaching the values of the parents in the Mount Vernon school district," he told The Columbus Dispatch in a story published Friday.
Several students interviewed by investigators described Freshwater, who has been employed by the school district for 21 years, as a great guy.
But Lynda Weston, the district's director of teaching and learning, told investigators that she has dealt with complaints about Freshwater for much of her 11-year term at the district, the report said.
A former superintendent, Jeff Maley, said he tried to find another position for Freshwater but couldn't because Freshwater was certified only in science, the report said.
Freshwater used a science tool known as a high-frequency generator to burn images of a cross on students' arms in December, the report said. Freshwater told investigators he simply was trying to demonstrate the device on several students and described the images as an "X," not a cross. But pictures show the images depict a cross, the report said.
Other findings show that Freshwater taught that carbon dating was unreliable to argue against evolution.

A ‘vulnerable’ man cut off his own head with a chainsaw after being ordered to move out of his home to make way for developers, police believe.
David Phyall’s severed head was found beside the power tool inside his housing association flat shortly after receiving his eviction notice.
Detectives were today investigating the possibility that the 58-year-old killed himself rather than leave his home of eight years.

He was the last resident living on an estate earmarked for demolition. All 71 surrounding flats were empty.
Paramedics and police made the gruesome find after receiving a 999 call.
An inquest is now being carried out into the exact cause of death and what had happened to Mr Phyall, described as ‘vulnerable’, beforehand.
It is understood police are not treating his death as suspicious.
Mr Phyall had lived in his flat at Bishopstoke in Eastleigh, Eastley, Hants, since 2000 and was fighting to stay there despite plans to bulldoze the entire area and rebuild it.
Many flats had already been boarded up.
Mr Phyall rented the property from Atlantic Housing Ltd.
He had been unhappy since the plans to level the flats and rebuild them were passed in 2006.
It is thought that he may have even been served with an eviction notice issued through the courts shortly before his death.
An inquest opened and adjourned by deputy central Hampshire coroner Simon Burge.
It listed the possible cause of death of Mr Phyall as ‘complete transaction of the neck’ and ‘chainsaw wound to the neck.’
An ambulance service spokesman said: ‘We were called to an address in Bishopstoke to reports to a “concerns for welfare.”
‘A rapid response vehicle attended and a search found a patient had sustained serious injuries.’
Ron Turtle, chairman of the Stoke Residents’ Association, said there was one tenant left whom he believed to be a disabled man who rented a ground-floor flat from Atlantic Housing.
He said: ‘They had offered him several places that were similar but he just didn’t want to move. In the end they had to go to court.’
Lib Dem Bishopstoke Parish Council chairman Anne Winstanley said: ‘The last I heard they were still negotiating with him to try to provide what he required to move into as an alternative.
‘It sounds very tragic for whatever the reason he met his death.’
Councillor Winstanley added that Bodmin Road had become a target for vandalism and nuisance behaviour in recent months.
The flats are thought to have been built in the 1960s but Atlantic Housing had revealed it would cost them more to repair than rebuild.
Southampton building firm Drew Smith were awarded a 7.8m pounds contract to design and build 54 replacement flats and 24 houses.
Three of the flats at Bodmin Road had been purchased by tenants under the right to buy but were repurchased by Atlantic Housing to enable the redevelopment to take place.
Atlantic Housing was unavailable for comment."

Not just emo. Sounds like goth, punks and kids who wear black would be affected too. I don't like this. No matter how weird these emo kids are they can't just take away their right to express themselves. Who knows perhaps schools here start adopting this type of attitude. Apparently kids can't colour their hair in a unconventional colour anymore or else they get suspended. When did it get this bad?! |

That's long been a policy in private schools and part of the uniform code. It may sound weird to those not from the New Orleans area, but here if you want a quality education you go to a private school, usually a Catholic school. Public school here is a joke.
To be honest, I don't see a problem with a uniform, including limits on colors and hair styles. I went through that school system and didn't have any problems.

I think it's an awesome idea especially for schools. If kids all had to dress the same way, then they would need to find other crap to tease each other about. Use their creativity.  No I'm just kidding. I could care less actually. I do hope that emo and goth kids get a kick in the nuts though. It's annoying to me that people try to define themselves by a type of music they listen to or a certain way of life. Thats not being an individual. It's being a pawn. |

They tried to do this to punk rock waaaaay back when, but it came back. They also tried to do this to metal, hip hop and rock and roll...but they came back. Personally, I think they're just adding fuel to the fire. Now they're going to create more little "scene kids" to make "emo" a bigger thing. It's going to look "dangerous" and "thrilling" to all these little kids.
Shit, i remember buying Divine Intervention by Slayer just because of the pentagram made out of skeletons on the cover when i was 10 or 11. Dad wasn't too happy about that. And that's the reaction i was looking for.
Didn't they try to do this by labelling Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, and Johnny Cash "outlaws"? And then they made more money than jesus. |

If Russia really cared about the future, they'd ban hip hop. I don't know who Pete Wentz is, but I'm sure he's less of a negative influence on kids than 50 Cent is. |

I think its wrong for a country to ban clothing style.
My parents went to Russia on holiday and hated it. Most of the buildings were Communist style..Not a place I want to visit. Plus the accents don't sound sexy.

Personally, I would much rather want a child to look up to Edo G., MF Doom, Cee Lo, Del, etc. than a lot of these cookie-cutter, self-described emo/screamo/hardcore/heavy metal/death metal/black metal/New Orleans blackened metal with a hint of lemon bands.
Granted, mainstream hip hop isn't worth two shits these days, but most of the stuff on the radio anymore isn't.

Father of three Brendon Alan Erhardt, 39, told the court he was masturbating before being pulled over by police for driving over 90mph and recording himself on video as well. He told the court he was "not dangerous" and was the only one at risk.
In the car was a loaded .22 rifle, a cooler in the trunk containing over 10 pounds of cannabis, drug pipes, and a back seat with cannabis plants on it. The "visibly agitated" Erhardt said he planned on smoking it all at home in Noonamah, Australia.
He said the drugs were found at a rest stop, and that the rifle was for shooting kangaroos as he drove. After applying twice for bail, Erhardt got his wish so that before being jailed he can tie the knot with his girlfriend.

It is a funny and strange thing that we always hate the young rebelious types, always. I'm ancient enough to remember kids being expelled from schools for growing Elvis style sideburns.
As a younbg hippie in atlanta I remember resuarants that wouldn't serve blacks or people with long hair or even a mustache.
Everyone hates the young complainers even if they did their own version of the same thing in their own youth. I find that strange.
There appears to be a lot of truth in the idea that censorers do what only psychotics do, they mistade illusion for reality. |

That's a lot like the way The Brothers Quay speak. You never really know what the fuck they're talking about exactly but in their case you know it's probably at least kinda profound. In Paul Klee's case (guy in the article), I think he's talking nonsense. That type of 'speak' is almost anti-social and alienating, unless you run with a crowd which all talks that shit.
