Last Call for Frankenstein

Tomorrow (Saturday) night marks the final Toronto performance of the Catalyst Theatre’s production of Frankenstein, which was picked up by the Canadian Stage for its latest season after the show scooped up a bunch of awards during its inaugural run (Outstanding New Play, Production, Score, Set, Costume and Lighting Design, among them).

If I am going to be completely honest here, this play admittedly isn’t for everyone. If the mere thought of a musical sends you running and screaming for the hills, this Frankenstein isn’t for you. Musical numbers, dance and movement choreography figure heavily into the show – as does its very unique and compelling costume design (see the image above for an example). In fact, it’s probably best that you put all former Frankenstein adaptations out of your mind before you take your seat, as this production, musical numbers aside, sticks closer to Mary Shelley’s original novel than most do – meaning it’s equal parts familial gothic melodrama and horror story. While there are some problems with the pacing – in particular, the first act feels overlong – the performances are exceptional across the board. So, if the idea of a monster musical tickles your fancy and an avant-garde take on a classic horror story sounds intriguing, you’d do well to surf on over to the Canadian Stage website, and secure some seats for closing night. Because once it’s gone, it’s gone.
