If the Oscars Cared About Horror

Total Film as a neat little piece about seven horror films that deserved Oscars. Author Sam Ashurst makes some great arguments. For example:

Evil Dead II (1987)

Should’ve Won: Best Film Editing

Who Actually Won That Year: The Last Emperor

Why Evil Dead II Deserved It More: Where do we begin? The Last Emperor was possibly the slowest film we saw in 1987. We’re not sure if there even were any edits. Also, it had a budget of around $25 million.

Evil Dead II, on the other hand, was made for about $25 and appears to be a near-constant stream of fancy camera moves and magical editing tricks.

It’s one of the most brilliantly paced horror flicks we’ve ever seen, and that’s partly because of the sublime reel-chops.

Unfortunately — and I’ll assume it’s the fault of an exceptionally daft editor — the piece is titled “7 Tacky Horrors That Deserved Oscars”

So, The Exorcist, Night of the Living Dead, The Thing and Halloween are tacky? Um, why would you say these films deserved Oscars yet call them tacky at the same time? Or should we just assume that horror movies are tacky by nature?

Read for yourself here.

All I know is that this year’s Oscars were a pain in my ass.

I work at a Movie Gallery and had to decorate the “gallery” section with fake red carpet, streamers, and a giant cardboard cut out of an Oscar statue. What a waste of time, none of our customers have even looked twice, accept of course for the lovable children who like to destroy everything they come across.

I totally agree on The Thing, it should have won in a bunch of different categories.
I’ve come never expect anything from the Oscars, so I’m never disappointed with them. I could care less about who wins, I just know what I like, and if it wins that’s great.
