Slipping into Darkness

In case you didn’t see it, the Toronto After Dark Film Festival announced its full line-up. They’re kickin’ ass in Year Two with some awesome friggin’ genre films. I caught some of these movies at the FanTasia Film Festival in Montreal this summer, and contributed some write-ups to the Festival guide. That said, some advice:

If you can only see one film at After Dark, make sure it’s Mulberry Street — this was a Rue Morgue fave at FanTasia. Don’t be turned off by the rat-people premise, this is low budget filmmaking at its more inventive, poignant, tense and inspiring. In the tradition of Romero, it’s also got an uncompromising viewpoint.

I’ve also seen Poultrygeist, which I looove. This is the definition of a crowd pleaser and the craziest thing Troma’s done. Definitely my favourite of Uncle Lloyd’s cinematic mindbombs. Don’t see it straight.

David Arquette’s The Tripper is a must for slasher fans who grew up in the ’80s. The dude found a way to give a beyond-tired subgenre a pulse. Plus it’s got Pee-Wee in it, and that’s all that matters.

Lastly, Murder Party (pictured above), another crowd pleaser. More lively low-budget filmmaking. Very satisfying to watch pretentious NYC art scenesters get slaughtered.

See the full line up here.

I second the recommendation of Mulberry Street. It was hands down, the best film that we saw at Fantasia this year.
