More than Meets the Scrimm

Mega Tall Mantron

Like any other red-blooded North American child-man who grew up in the ‘80s, I saw the new Transformers movie this weekend. And while that bombastic piece of toy porn has little to do with horror, one genre-related thing struck me while watching it: Megatron’s voice and personality seems modeled after The Tall Man from Phantasm. For example, he chases down the kid in the film and yells “BOOOOOY” with an eerily familiar inflection. Hugo Weaving (The Matrix, Lord of the Rings) voices the Deceptacon baddie, but me thinks they should’ve hired Angus Scrimm. After all, as you can see by the pic, The Tall Man and the original Megatron did have the same haircut. Plus, The Tall Man did his share of transforming throughout the Phantasm series.

In related news, as Dread Central points out, this farewell video that Don Coscarelli made for the original Alamo Drafthouse seems to contain test footage for a new Phantasm film.

And lastly, check out this hilarious Phantasm-related Photoshop job for a very unlikely Nerf product.
