Welcome to the Rue Crew's official blog, where the designers and editors of Rue Morgue magazine share their terrible thoughts, odd opinions, anguished artwork and other random scraps of meat not necessarily fit for human consumption.

Death Proof's dialogue dragged. But I felt that the car scenes at the end more than made up for it. I could have done without Tarentino doing a cameo every five minutes, but all in all, I had a blast watching both flicks.

I agree: Death Proof was incredibly dull at times. Almost could have made that a 30 minute short: the action scenes, Kurt's hamming it up, and the freeze frame finish save it for me. Kill Bill could easily have been edited down too. I think the Weinsteins let him get away with whatever he wants. BUT I still loved Grindhouse as a movie overall. There has been nothing like it, since I can remember, and with trailers and all, it's a fun ride (even with QT's rambling dames). Of course if he'd just had the girls rambling naked (like a true exploitation flick) that 90 minutes would have gone a lot faster...

Death Proof was such a let down for me, everything about it felt stretched out to try and fill the bill as a second feature. My biggest problem was that the characters all felt like they were simply aping Tarantino's manner of speaking rather than speaking from their hearts during the extended dialog scenes.

I don't think that this would have been as evident had Planet Terror not felt like a much more legitimate movie that we were missing a few portions of, whereas DP just felt like a half-assed pass at a film.

I think Quentin's "de-volution" is a prime example of what happens when an easily influenced and suggestable person starts believing their own press clippings. Too many people have labeled QT as a genius (myself included) because he re-invigorated a style of film that a lot of us had never been exposed to. No, genius isn't the right term for the way his mind works- idiot savant would be more appropriate nomenclature. The guy is a synaptic cyclone whose mind is a veritable encyclopedia of obscure and underground films.

As anyone with half a brain and a ticket stub for Grindhouse can tell you, gone are the days of the "fuck machine" coffee house repartee of Reservoir Dogs-they've been replaced by bloated, self-indulgent, and overly referential verbal plot devices. Russell's dialogue notwithstanding, I can't remember a single quotable line from Death Proof, and for a Tarantino film, that's unforgivable!

Agreed. Quentin's lost his touch. Death Proof was a new low for the guy.

I don't compare box office draws on whether a movie is good or not. Jackie Brown is on the low end for box office sales, but I feel it's arguably Quentin's best film. Certainly the most mature.
So I disregarded that from the article. But after seeing Death Proof, I have to agree with the writer. Aside from Kurt Russell's inspired killer and the two fantastic car sequences, I was bored to tears. Normally, QT's dialogue is dynamic enough to carry the movie but there was so much of it, it became a chore to sit through.
