Since March of last year, the definitive cut of Clive Barker’s NIGHTBREED (dubbed The Cabal Cut ) has made the rounds at theatres around the world in the hopes of proving fan interest for the film’s complete restoration for home video. It’s been a long and hard battle, fought by the film’s creators and stars as well as its legion of fans.
So it seems only fitting that on Friday, July 19 (exactly one year to the day after Rue Morgue’s screening of the film in Toronto) the battle officially ended. This past Friday, at San Diego Comic Con, Scream Factory announced Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut, as one of the titles slated for their 2014 wave of releases.
While full details are sparse at the moment, it was announced that the two-hour plus rough cut, painstakingly pieced together by Russell Cherrington, Restoration Director, and Mark Miller, Vice President of Seraphim Films, would be restored to pristine condition with the help of Scream Factory and will be getting the deluxe treatment, complete with multiple bonus features.
Rue Morgue spoke to Cherrington and Miller shortly after the announcement was made. Quoting Miller: “Clive, quoting Goethe, once told me that there was genuine magic in boldness. Almost five years ago, I was feeling bold when I sent Clive a text message asking if I could search for the missing footage to his film Nightbreed. Long story short, the footage was found (on VHS tapes), reinstated, and it toured the world to universal acclaim. We all would have been happy if that were the end of our story, but it was not.
“Friday, July 19, while in a meeting, I received an email from Morgan Creek telling me that they had struck a deal with Shout/Scream Factory and Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut was officially getting the digitally restored DVD release treatment. To say this is a dream is an understatement. Dreams fade when you wake. This is a tangible piece of magic. We are overjoyed, and completely in shock.
“Thanks to everyone who helped make this a reality. They are legion. This was a true grassroots movement, brought to fruition by people who love this movie passionately. Congratulations, we did it.
“I can’t wait for what comes next.”
Cherrington had this to say about the recent developments:
“All I want to say to everyone is thank you for everybody’s support. We could not have done this without the thousands of fans of Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut that got behind the film. It is people like you that made this happen and the reason Morgan Creek has given Nightbreed a second life via Scream Factory.
“I look forward to continuing to work on The Cabal Cut of Nightbreed with Mark Miller and Clive Barker.
“Today is a great day and I cannot wait to hold a DVD and Blu-ray in my hands. It will be like winning the world cup.”
Congratulations to everyone – fans and creators alike – involved in the movement to bring The Cabal Cut to the masses. It’s been a long, hard road, but now Barker’s original vision of “a hymn to the monstrous” will finally be available for everyone to see.
Keep watching here as more details, including some words from Barker himself, of The Cabal Cut’s official release on DVD/Blu-ray become available.
