Monstro Bizarro: The Muppet Beast

on November 27, 2012 | 1 Comment

A photo of a bizarre, “muppet-looking” creature – supposedly shot in Namibia, South Africa, – recently popped up on several internet news outlets.  According to the reports, the previously unknown creature was shot by a hunting party after they stumbled on several of these animals in the “dense jungle.”

The details were posted November 19 by The Daily Telegraph:

Locals came across the bizarre being while they were escorting a shooting party in Namibia, local media reported.

Witnesses state that the creature was spotted apparently foraging for food, one of the shooting party wounded it with his rifle and it escaped into the thick brush.

The locals tracked it to a nearby lair or nest where they found three more creatures of similar size.

The wounded creature attacked one of the shooting party and it was shot dead, the others escaped into the brush

The body of the creature was taken back to the local camp, police later removed its corpse and a full forensics investigation is under way.

So far I don’t have any further information about the Muppet Beast other than what is repeated above.  Early conjecture as to what it might be include hoax (of course), some type of sloth, or a hairless monkey.  The photo is intriguing, but does raise some red flags due to the backdrop which appears to be some type of jungle setting.  The Namibian landscape is primarily desert terrain due to the extremely dry climate.  There is some variation within its five geographic regions, but “dense jungle” is not one of them.

The Muppet Beast may yet turn out to be a cryptid, but it might also turn out to be a bust.  More details as they become available.

This is a disturbing story for a few reasons. The creature in the photo could be the putrified remains of human being — either a pygmy or a child. In either case it appears to have been burnt — as dark skin tends to turn pinkish white after it is badly burned (or is it skinned?). It might be a full term fetus of a primate too.

You’re right, Lyle, this does not fit Namibia — more like the Congo were some bad stuff is going down these days.

And given the size of the creature, why would you shoot it, even if displaying defensive behavior?

With most cryptids the mystery is part of the fun. This one just gives me the willies.
