WIN TICKETS TO NORTH BY NORTHWEST WITH GUILLERMO DEL TORO
It’s the final round of our Guillermo del Toro HITCHCOCK giveaways.
For those just tuning in, Guillermo del Toro has been doing a series of Alfred Hitchcock films at the TIFF LIGHTBOX, offering a one-hour introduction and a one-hour post-screening discussion for each presentation. So far, he’s shown NOTORIOUS and FRENZY and his introductions and post-screening discussions have been absolutely amazing.
The bad news is, the screenings have all sold out.
But the good news is, Rue Morgue (in conjunction with the Rue Morgue Podcast & The Mortuary) has tickets to giveaway!
Finally, we have four pairs for the last film in the series, 1959′s epic spy adventure NORTH BY NORTHWEST, starring Cary Grant and Eva Saint Marie.
It’s screening on Wednesday, May 16th @ 7 p.m.
NORTH BY NORTHWEST features one of Hitchcock’s most enduring images – the scene where the crop duster hunts down Cary Grant over a wide open landscape in broad daylight. So to enter the contest, tell us your favourite SCENE from an Alfred Hitchcock film.
Scribble your answer right here on the blog and the winners will be picked by random on Sun, May 13th.
Good luck!

Easy.. the shower scene in PSYCHO
The phone booth scene in “The Birds”
It’s really tough to pick just one, but I’m going to have to go with two of them here:
- First off, in “Rear Window”, when James Stewart is first seeing what appears to have been a murder while looking through his binoculars into the apartments across from him. The idea of witnessing something so horrific, yet the uncertainty of not being exactly sure of what had taken place, combined with the fact that he was confined to his wheelchair makes my skin crawl.
- Secondly, in “Vertigo”, my favorite scene is when James Stewart finally puts all the pieces of the puzzle together, and realizes that Kim Novak’s character had pretty successfully pulled the wool over his eyes (so to speak), but gave herself away by wearing the necklace. They run up the stairs to the church, before Kim screams and accidentally falls out the window. The thing I particularly like about this scene is there was foreshadowing of a happy ending, but it still ends in tragedy – in a sense, he had nearly gained his true love back by finding a look-alike, but at the same time, it was her all along…but she still dies in the same tragedy as the one in the hoax.
Dinner table scene of Shadow of Doubt and the crazy push in on Joseph Cotten as he delivers the monologue.
Rooftop shoot-out in Vertigo
Defintely the ending scenes in Lifeboat. Such an underrated Hitch movie.
It relies solely on human emorion to convey the message.
One lone crow is steadily joined by hundreds more as it watches Melanie having a cigarette on a playground. The Birds
Too many to pick just one…. The undeniable power of the Psycho shower scene, the staircase scene in Notorious in which Claude Rains’ character realizes his life is about to come to an end, the merry-go-round scene of Strangers on a Train… Hitchcock rewrote/wrote filmic language.
Potato truck scene in Frenzy!
Opening scene from strangers on a train. The first time the audience sees either mans face is the exact moment they meet. Perfect.
Hard to pick a favourite BUT the shot that confounds me the most is the long take from the second floor landing in Notorious. It swoops in over the railing and down to the second floor revealing the key in Ingrid Bergman’s hand.
Perfect.
(also anything with Jimmy Stewart being a prat in “Rope”! Love it! )
When Kim Novak allegedly falls off the Rooftop in Vertigo!
This sounds like such an exciting event.
Psycho: the last scene when Norman Bates sitting down and his face changes for a sec. Creepy! Love it.
Rear Window, when the killer from across the street has realized that he has been seen, the jig is up, and you hear him outside James Stewart’s apartment door, about to break it down, and JS’s character wheelchair bound self is sitting there helpless.
End of Psycho with the push-in on Anthony Perkins’ face, and the scene in The Birds where Tippi Hendren is waiting outside of the schoolhouse and suspenseful increasing number of birds on the jungle gym behind her.
The scene in Vertigo near the end when James Stewart snaps and drags Kim Novak kicking and screaming up the bell tower as he recounts his horrid tale.
The final scene in North by Northwest where the climbing down the face of Mt. Rushmore
The airplane scene in north by nortwest
Shower scene in Psycho.
So many to pick just one is crazy but i’ll have to go with the shower scene in psycho who doesn’t love that almost everybody knows that scene even if they are not a hitchcock fan
My favorite Hitchcock scene has to be the tennis match sequence during STRANGERS ON A TRAIN. The entire crowd on the bleachers looking left and right with the play, but the dastardly villain looking straight ahead.
Tough one. I’ll say the attempted murder sequence in Dial M For Murder (especially if you can see it in 3D). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBoL2vMJkCs
The shower scene in PSYCHO — one of the most iconic, and disturbing, scenes in the history of film.
The final ascent up the tower in Vertigo, ending with Scottie stepping out to the edge of the bell tower and looking below…
The telephone booth scene in The Birds
I have to go with the shower scene in Psycho.
I like Hitchcock’s villains at their most evilest, so it’s a tie between Norman Bates “We all go a little crazy sometimes” speech in Psycho and the rape scene in Frenzy. The world’s not a pretty place sometimes and that is intrinsic in every one of the master’s films.
Shower scene in Psycho.
The one where the guy keeps saying “Lovely” over and over again in Frenzy
North By Northwest scene on Mt. Rushmore.
The phone booth scene in THE BIRDS. Still hating walking pass a group of birds pecking on the ground to this day.
The scene in Rear Window when Lars catches Grace Kelly in his apartment — she explains herself to the police — and while she is doing that she signals to Jimmy Stewart that she’s found the wedding ring. Lars looks down at her fingers, realizes she’s signalling to someone, and he looks up right into the camera / Jimmy Stewart’s eyes.
The auction scene in North by Northwest!
The opening scene of Rope.
Crop duster scene, for sure.
Contest is now closed.
Congratulations to Justin, Jim Sanders, Alex Peterson & Facundo!
